Making your own pasta sauce is such a great skill. Not only is it delicious and easy. But it also gives you the opportunity to control exactly what you put in the tomato sauce.
In this recipe I’ll show you 2 different methods to make your own vegan tomato pasta sauce. A quick version which can be made in 5 minutes and a version with fresh tomatoes.
How To Make Quick Tomato Pasta Sauce?
The “quick” tomato sauce is such a convenient sauce. Perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time or just don’t feel like cooking. It only takes 5 minutes to make and a couple ingredients.
Start by dicing the onion and garlic. You can use a white or red onion. I ran out of white onions so I use a red onion. Next bake the garlic and onion in a little olive oil until they become soft. Add the canned tomatoes and spices and cook the sauce until everything is combined and the sauce is warm. If you want a super smooth tomato sauce you can blend the sauce. But I often eat it without blending as well.
Add your favourite pasta. I made some Gnocchi. The tomato sauce with canned tomatoes has a beautiful red colour.
How To Make Fresh Tomato Pasta Sauce?
The “Fresh” tomato sauce is perfect if you have a little more time and want a tomato sauce with fresh ingredients. I did use some dried herbs in this sauce but you can also use fresh herbs instead.
Start by dicing the onion, garlic and tomatoes. Put a little olive oil in a pan and add the onion, garlic and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft. This takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Add the spices and blend the sauce when the tomatoes have become soft.

Add your favourite Pasta. The fresh sauce has a more orange flavour compared to the sauce with the canned tomatoes. If you want to sauce to be a little more red you can add some tomato puree.
Vegan Toppings for Tomato Pasta Sauce.
The options for the toppings are unlimited. I added some fresh basil, cherry tomatoes and vegan cream cheese. But you can also add other vegetables and maybe some vegan cheese.
I also recommend adding some vegan meat or mushrooms.
